Chapter 12: Hell’s Rage

Dad hadn’t come up from the basement last night. Mom had said it was for the best. I wish I could’ve helped them more in the interim, but soon it was going to be over. We hadn’t found much else on Hell’s Rage yesterday after determining that I should use the feeling of defeat to manifest it, so I was just going to have to trick my body into feeling the emotion.

“Knock, knock.” Kyle slowly opened the door. “Your mom has breakfast ready. Al’s already at the kitchen table.” He gave me a smile.

“Okay.” I rolled over onto my side so I could face him better. “How’re you feeling?” I never understood why he didn’t show the symptoms of the Inner Demons like Mom and Dad did. I’d have to ask Andre about Shiva. Speaking of which, “Should Shiva come over when I cast this?” I wasn’t sure if Hell’s Rage had a blast zone or if it would reach her at Cade’s house.

“I’m not sure. We’ll ask Al and your mom when we get downstairs.” He walked over to my bedside and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “How’d you sleep?” I gave him a small smile.

“Pretty decent. Just trying to figure out how I’m going to trick my body into feeling defeated.” That was the downside to always being angry. It was the first emotion to take over when anything negative happened.

“You’ll get it.” He gave me another smile and then pulled me out of bed while giving my ass a squeeze.

“Hey now.” It was mostly a tease, so I let a grin show on my face. He gave me a smug smirk in response.

“Oh, my bad. I was just trying to be of service.” His voice was dark, but he still managed to make me feel safe. I hadn’t realized how badly I missed him until spending time with him again. He truly felt like my other half. He always had the words to say, the encouragement I needed, and he knew me like the back of his hand despite us only being together for five months.

“Yeah, yeah.” I tussled the hair on his head as we started down the stairs.

“Aren’t you going to put pants on?” I jerked my head to Al who was standing at the landing and then down to my legs. Heat rushed out my cheeks in embarrassment as I pulled Kyle in front of me. “I know I didn’t catch you the first time, but this is a house full of people now.” I wanted to shrink back into a dark corner. I knew he was only teasing, but that was almost worse.

I ran up the few steps we had gone down and made a V-line into my room. I paused at the dresser drawer to catch my breath and try to get rid of the heat in my face. Opening the middle drawer, I pulled out a pair of leggings and put them on. It had been sort of cool out lately, so they’d give me a bit of protection from the cool wind.
